Spine &Back Pain

Back & Spine

The spine is the pillar of the body — and the first place that everyday strain settles. Here is why back pain happens, and how to ease it.

What back pain really is

Your spine is the central pillar of the body — twenty-four vertebrae stacked into a flexible column, cushioned by intervertebral discs that absorb pressure and let you bend, twist and turn. Layers of muscle and ligament hold it all together and keep you upright.

The lower back (lumbar) and neck (cervical) regions are the most mobile — and the most vulnerable. Because they move the most and carry the most load, they are where stiffness, tension and pain tend to settle first.

Why back pain happens

Back pain rarely has a single cause. More often it is the slow accumulation of everyday strain — several factors stacking up at once.

  • Heavy lifting, pushing and pulling — especially with poor technique
  • Long hours sitting or standing in one position
  • Poor posture that overloads the lower spine
  • Weak core and back muscles that cannot support the load
  • Excess body weight adding constant pressure

Finding relief

For mild, everyday back pain the goal is to calm the tension, restore movement, and strengthen the muscles that protect your spine. Always see a doctor for severe, persistent or radiating pain.

  • Keep moving — gentle activity beats prolonged bed rest
  • Massage a warming balm into the affected area to release muscle tension and boost local circulation
  • Once the pain settles, build a regular routine to strengthen your back and core
  • Mind your posture when sitting, standing and lifting
